Sun Sign Calculator

Your sun sign — also called your zodiac sign — is determined by the position of the sun on your birth date. It represents your core identity, ego, and life force.

What is my sun sign?

In tropical Western astrology, your sun sign is the zodiac sign the Sun occupied at the moment you were born. For most birth dates, the month and day are enough to identify it — enter them above and the calculator returns the sign.

Births close to a sign change are the exception. The Sun crosses from one sign into the next at a precise moment that falls slightly differently each year and reads differently across time zones, so a birthday sitting on a boundary date can belong to either sign. In that case the exact birth time and place — a full chart — settle it rather than a date range.

Sun vs Moon vs Rising

Sun

Astrologers traditionally read the Sun as the core of the chart — identity, will, the thing you are consciously becoming.

what you need

Birth date (month and day for most births).

Moon

Read as the inner and emotional register: what soothes you, what you need privately, how you process feeling.

what you need

Birth date — though the Moon moves quickly, so a precise reading can depend on birth time and location.

Rising

Also called the Ascendant. Read as the doorway of the chart: first impressions, instinctive approach, the frame others meet first.

what you need

Exact birth time and place — it changes roughly every two hours.

How is your sun sign determined?

Tropical astrology divides the year into twelve thirty-degree segments anchored to the seasons: Aries begins at the March equinox, Cancer at the June solstice, Libra at the September equinox, Capricorn at the December solstice. The Sun spends about thirty days crossing each one.

Your sun sign is the segment the Sun occupied when you were born. The Sun does not change signs at midnight, and because the calendar year and the solar year don't match exactly, the changeover drifts by a few hours from year to year. That is why published boundary dates vary by a day between sources — none of them is wrong; they are rounding a moving moment.

This calculator uses the standard tropical date ranges, which hold for the large majority of birthdays. If yours falls on or beside a boundary, treat the result as provisional and confirm it with a chart built from your exact birth time and place.

Questions about sun signs

I was born on a cusp — which sign am I?+
In tropical Western astrology there is no shared 'cusp sign' — the sun is in one sign or the next. But the changeover happens at a specific moment that shifts by year and time zone, so a date-only calculator like this one is not definitive for births within about a day of a boundary. If that's you, calculate a full chart with your exact birth time and place before settling the question.
What's the difference between tropical and sidereal sun signs?+
Tropical (Western) astrology anchors the signs to the seasons — Aries begins at the March equinox. Sidereal astrology, used in Vedic traditions, anchors them to the constellations, which have drifted relative to the seasons because of precession. The two systems can give different sun signs for the same birth. This calculator uses the tropical zodiac, the standard in Western practice.
Why does my sun sign sometimes appear wrong by a day?+
The sun doesn't change signs at midnight, and the moment it changes moves slightly from year to year. Date-range tables round that to a single cutoff date, which fits the great majority of birthdays but can be off by a day near a boundary. Your exact birth time, date and location resolve it.
Is my sun sign the same as my zodiac sign?+
In everyday use, yes — 'zodiac sign', 'star sign' and 'sun sign' all point to where the sun was on your birth date. Astrologers also read the moon sign and rising sign, which together with the sun are usually called the Big Three.
Does my sun sign define my whole personality?+
No. Astrology treats the sun sign as one symbolic piece of a much larger chart — ten planets plus the angles, each in a sign and a house — and it is a language for reflection rather than a measurement of who you are. Two people with the same sun sign can read very differently once the rest of the chart is considered.
